Week 8: Final Project Update
My final project is going okay. I really have not had the most time recently, so I have not done a ton of research yet. My theme is rebellion and revolution and its portrayal within dramas and theatre, and, as such, I have several plays from different cultures lined up as research. I think the theme is specific enough that it is not too broad, but the themes like rebellion and the medium of theatre is honed-in enough that I will be able to pull out some valuable takeaways from the research and project in the end.
I do enjoy the multicultural aspect of this project (and class in general). So much of our education in literature and social studies deals in primarily Western works. To have this opportunity to explore not just literature from other cultures, but plays specifically, will certainly open a whole new world of literature to me, which is exciting within itself. It is nice to see the universal human experience- it adds a sense of relatability to other cultures when I examine their art and find similar themes and conventions.
One struggle I did have was finding secondary sources, but I have started looking in better places and have found some valuable articles pertaining to the primary sources I have. I still have a lot of research to do, but this is a start. The next step, beyond research, is actually formulating ideas for what my final project will look like. NeatLine is interesting, so I may end up using that.
Hey Jalen, I'm glad to hear that you were able to find primary sources! I can't seem to find many primary sources, or at least I don't have a good, consistent way of doing so, but I can find secondary sources. If you ever have advice to give on finding primary sources I'd love to hear it.
ReplyDeleteI too have had the opposite problem, finding primary sources has been a difficulty! Which ancient cultures have you zeroed in on so far, and are any of them very rich with literature that I should look into? For example, I have found ancient India to be a treasure trove of literature, and especially of messages hidden within story telling. As far as secondary sources, I have found that I can often find subject matter relevant to my topic in articles that at face value do not directly reflect my goal. Gathering information from sources that do not directly intend to provide that information is a difficult skill and takes time.
ReplyDeleteI have had the other of the 2 main problems, which is finding primary texts in different cultures. My theme is love tragedies and this theme isn't really in Asian culture much so it's been difficult finding a primary text about it. I'm thinking of looking at modern adaptations of famous love tragedies that take place within Asia at this point
